P90X program is a highly developed training strategy called “muscle confusion”, that speeds up the conditioning process through continuously adding unique movements and exercises so that your system never levels off and you also never lose interest. The exercises can be done at home or at the gym. The more that you mix up the muscles, the greater the body needs to work to keep up.

This is also a well rounded program that addresses the full range of fitness needs from strength to flexibility to plyometric training to cardio, as well as including a nutrition guide.

The workouts are long & hard — many are up to an hour and the yoga is an hour and a half — but they are broken down into segments.  You get a visible “progress bar” on the screen so you can adjust your pace to the amount of time remaining.

Additionally, the more assortment you put in your exercise routine, the greater and quicker your results will be. Through breaking up old workout routines plus opening new doorways, secondary as well as tertiary muscle groups are continuously getting stimulated and developed.

This is an advanced workout and is definitely not for people who have not been exercising regularly. It can challenge even the fittest athlete. There is a fitness test included, and if you cannot pass the test they recommend you start with something easier.

If you cannot do 15 push-ups, 25 sit-ups, run/jog for 30mins, and do basic weight training with 15-20 lb dumbells, then you’re not ready for this workout and you’ll struggle a bit too much to really get the benefits.

If you are not comfortable jumping repeatedly then you may want to hold off on the plyo exercises module for a while.

If you are not exercising regularly you may be better served by starting with a program such as Power 90 which is a great preparation for the much more intense P90x.

A tip for older folks starting P90x: Muscles will strengthen faster than tendons & joints, so take it easy with lighter weights in the first month.

What additional equipment do you need?

1. 85″ Yoga Mat

2. A couple pairs of dumbells (something light for higher reps, and another for stretch goal). Resistance bands are probably the best option so you’re not spending a ton off the bat.

3. Chin-up bar for use in-home.

4. Yoga Blocks (a bit optional), but if you can afford them – they’re “nice to have”

5. Chair (for plyo exercises. Something you can step on, and throw around easily – but is very stable).

6. Some sort of protein shake drink for recovery.

7. Heart rate monitor of some kind – got the basic POLAR one.
